In India and the developing world, the story of the smart protein sector is still being written. As we grapple with the effects of Covid-19 and climate crises, it’s clear that we can’t afford to settle for anything less than a paradigm shift.
Mission for Smart Protein
Through our work, we’re articulating our vision for the protein supply of the future, today – one which stewards planetary health, tackles malnutrition, benefits farmers, and creates jobs for millions. We’re calling this the Mission for Smart Protein.
Indigenous Crops Initiative
Creating robust R&D, strengthening value chains, and stimulating smart protein entrepreneurship to make Indian crops such as pulses and millets viable raw materials for plant-based foods. The benefits to biodiversity, farmers’ welfare, and food innovation are immense.
Innovation Hubs for the Global South
Setting up research, incubation, and commercialization centres in key universities and industry clusters, focused on building talent pools, investigating key research areas, facilitating technology transfer to the market, and nurturing the next generation of smart protein innovators.
Smart Seafood without Sacrifice
Stewarding the health and vitality of our oceans, by fostering R&D, business, and trade in plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation-derived alternative seafood products and ingredients. This is a major opportunity area within the smart protein landscape, and India can be a global epicentre for its growth.
Leveraging and advancing manufacturing expertise in biopharma, industrial fermentation, 3-D printing and other areas to build essential infrastructure for scaling up alternative protein. Establishing India’s position as a supply-chain powerhouse for the next decade, creating jobs and value addition for millions.
Smart Protein Corridors
Deepening and leveraging bilateral relationships with markets which have strategic advantages complementary to India’s, such as Israel, Singapore, the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands – a major opportunity to boost trade and technology transfer, with a focus on driving down the cost and increasing the quality of products in the smart protein sector.
