About GFI India

The Good Food Institute India (GFI India) is the leading expert on India’s emerging smart protein sector—the ecosystem of plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation-derived meat, eggs, and dairy. As part of an international network of organisations across the U.S., Brazil, Europe, Israel, Japan, and APAC, we work at the intersection of science, business, and public sector engagement to accelerate the R&D, technical know-how transfer, industrialisation, and commercialisation of smart proteins in India.

How can we feed 10 billion people and improve the global food system for the planet, people, and animals?

Text on the image says, :to meet global demand, meat production is expected to increase significantly by 2050. Alternative proteins can feed a growing population and foster a more sustainable, secure, and just food system while being affordable, delicious, and nutritious.

Our theory of change

How can we feed 10 billion people and improve the global food system for the planet, people, and animals?

We work around the world to make smart proteins—plant-based, fermentation-derived, and cultivated from animal cells—as delicious and affordable as conventional meat. As part of an international network of organisations, we are uniquely positioned to accelerate the smart protein industry by catalysing and growing the field.

By diversifying conventional sources of protein using sustainably produced sources, we can usher in a future that benefits our planet and its inhabitants.

What we do

We advance alternative protein innovation to make the global food system better for the planet, people, and animals. We focus on three programmatic priorities:

Cultivating a strong scientific ecosystem

Science

Our Sci-Tech team maps out the most neglected areas that will allow smart proteins to compete on taste and price. We catalyse R&D in smart proteins, build strong scientific and training ecosystems, and publish technical analyses and other resources to ensure the sector is equipped to overcome its most critical challenges.

Emboldening public support for alternative proteins

Policy

Our policy teams work with governments worldwide to leverage smart proteins as solutions to the challenges they face. We support increased public investment in alternative proteins, fairness in the regulatory sphere, and the ability to use clear, consumer-friendly language on product labels.

Encouraging the private sector to prioritise alternative proteins

Industry

Our Industry team delivers industry and market insights, highlighting opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and investment across the private sector. We identify and prioritise barriers to growth, spotlight high-potential opportunities, and provide leading market intelligence.
